of summer vacation
and it has been by no means a lazy week!
Monday was a day full of hair appointments and meetings
and Tuesday thru Thursday the kids had Vacation Bible School at our church
which I also helped out with, I was a small group leader for about 10 4th graders.
We were at VBS from about 8:45am until 12:30pm
by the time we got home for lunch and naps the day was almost gone
We did manage to sneak in a beach afternoon on Tuesday though.
We have family in town from Florida this week. (yippee)
we are all getting together today
for a hangout and surprise 88th birthday party for our Grandma O.
I was asked to make her a cake,
more specifically I was asked to make a fabulous cake!
I said sure, and went ahead an ordered a cake from a friends home shop.
I know , she asked I make a cake but I was too scared to mess it up!
My husband did not like this idea and asked me to cancel the order and make the cake!
UGH, really?
So I did as requested, I made a cake.
Let me tell you it took all day for me to make this cake.
I made a two tiered 12inch round cake with a filling.
Want to see it? well of course I took pictures of the process...
Here are the 2 rounds, made of a butter almond cake, i started the crumb coat layer here
frosting is a homemade vanilla almond butter-cream
look at the mess I make when baking!
crumb coat layer complete
he really wanted to try the cake!
All stacked and ready for another small layer of crumb coat...
I had to add a small layer of crumb coat to the side so that when it crusted over
it would hold the Bavarian cream in!
then into the fridge to chill for an hour
I had just finished frosting the entire cake
when I came back in the kitchen I saw this...
a chunk missing from the side of the cake
look who was standing at the table with a spoon in her mouth...
BUSTED...
Now I did not come up with the saying on my own
my super cool friend had it on her Hubby's 30th birthday cake
See his cake here...
AND MY CAKE...
There you have it!
I can not wait to try this cake.
We ended having leftover batter and frosting
we made a 9inch round for our house to try last night.
By the time we stuffed our faces with steak and potatoes
everyone was too full for cake.
Don't worry I stayed up late and tried a piece. It was delish!
that looks spectacular! I really need to learn how to make a fantastic cake... I stick to a sheet cake (decorated with sprinkles, of course) and cupcakes (also decorated with sprinkles). maybe it's time for me to grow up ;)
ReplyDeleteAnother reason to be in awe of lil you. I have never made a 2 layer cake that has not fallen over. Ever.

ReplyDeleteI'm your newest follower from the Super Stalker Sunday Hop! I would love for you to visit my blog www.mommydigger.com and follow me
Wow, that looked really good! I used to bake quite alot myself but have slowed down alot in the last couple of years. When you go to my blog you will understand why. Too long to post and try not to say it over & over. I came by way of the blog hop and am following your blog thru GFC, FB and Twitter. I would love a follow back on all three if you don't mind. I am working my way up to being able to do product reviews and they like those numbers. I hope you are having a great day and no rush, just when you have time will be soon enough. See ya soon!
